The novel “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha” by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was published in the early 17th century and tells the story of a knight-idealist who has created a fantasy world completely detached from reality. For Quixote, the important values are respect, kindness, chivalry, and bravery. The book is considered one of the greatest literary works of all time.
The ballet based on the novel, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by the Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus, premiered in 1869. The ballet is one of the most famous classical works in its genre, bringing to the audience virtuoso dance, beautiful music, and the temperamental joy of life characteristic of Spain.
