Don Quijote

The ballet classic “Don Quixote,” performed by the Lviv National Opera of Ukraine, will come to Estonia next year.

The ballet troupe from the prestigious Lviv National Opera will perform the show based on the grand novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra on February 8th at the Alexela Concert Hall and on February 10th at the Vanemuine Concert Hall.

The performers from the renowned Ukrainian Lviv National Opera will bring to Estonia not only the world-famous classical choreography but also the stage production and luxurious costumes. Lviv Opera’s classical ballet is known for its bright and emotional performance.

The novel “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha” by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was published in the early 17th century and tells the story of a knight-idealist who has created a fantasy world completely detached from reality. For Quixote, the important values are respect, kindness, chivalry, and bravery. The book is considered one of the greatest literary works of all time.

The ballet based on the novel, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by the Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus, premiered in 1869. The ballet is one of the most famous classical works in its genre, bringing to the audience virtuoso dance, beautiful music, and the temperamental joy of life characteristic of Spain.

The performance is supported by the City of Tartu.
